Simulating Beef Cattle Herd Productivity with Varying Cow Liveweight and Fixed Feed Supply

چکیده
The liveweight of New Zealand beef cows has increased in recent decades due to selection for higher growth rates. Published data suggest that the efficiency cow production decreases with increasing liveweight. Changes herd size, feed demand, production, and cash operating surplus (COS) were simulated average mature varied 450, 500, 550, 600 kg. With total annual demand fixed at same level, all scenarios numbers weaned calves decreased When model was run consistent calf across liveweights (scenario A), heavier more profitable. However, using published (scenarios B C), herds less likely most realistic scenario hill country farms B) had COS decrease from Dollars (NZD) 456/ha a 450 kg NZD 424/ha cows. Reductions relatively small, which may not deter farmers breeding results this analysis combined indirect potential economic impacts heaviest be optimal conditions.

Cullin the Beef Cow Herd
Removing select cattle from a herd (culling) is done to improve herd performance and profitability Production and market conditions influence culling criteria Some cattle are obvious candidates for culling (e g , cows with poor breeding performance or cancer eye), but cattle can and should be culled for reasons that may not be readily observable Simply put, cows are selected for culling based o...
متن کاملA beef herd model for simulating feed intake, animal performance, and manure excretion in farm systems.
A beef herd submodel was created for integration with other farm components to form a whole-farm model capable of simulating a wide range of beef production systems. This herd submodel determined the best available feed or feed mix to meet the fiber, energy, and protein requirements for each of up to six animal groups on the farm. The groups comprised any combination of cows, nursing calves, yo...
متن کاملModelling the spread of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in a beef cattle herd and its impact on herd productivity
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a common pathogen of cattle herds that causes economic losses due to reproductive disorders in breeding cattle and increased morbidity and mortality amongst infected calves. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of BVDV spread on the productivity of a beef cow-calf herd using a stochastic model in discrete time that accounted for (1) the difference in tr...
متن کاملUtilization of Heterosis in a Beef Cow Herd
George H. Shull, while working as a corn geneticist at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory from 1904 to 1915, observed that when two different pure-bred lines of corn were crossbred the resulting progeny exhibited physical traits superior to those of the parents (Glass, 2010). Shull described the offspring of pure-bred crosses as having increased heartiness, size, fruitfulness, speed of developme...
متن کاملDefining Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle
Most breeding programs have focused on improving economically relevant output traits such as growth, carcass quality and fertility to enhance the economic viability of beef production systems. Generally absent from current breeding programs in the U.S. are avenues for exploiting genetic variation in feed efficiency, even though reductions in feed inputs would substantially improve profitability...
